Recently, Councillor Shazna Muzammil had the incredible opportunity to join Thames Valley Police TVP Milton Keynes on a night shift, an experience that profoundly impacted her view of the dedication and professionalism displayed by law enforcement officers. From responding to urgent calls to providing support to those in need, the officers demonstrated an unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the community.
The shift began with a briefing, after which the team swiftly responded to a distress call from an older lady and her daughter, who were frightened by an intruder attempting to enter their home. Observing the compassionate response and adept handling of the situation by officers PC Poole and PC Matt was truly heartening. Throughout the night, the team engaged in proactive patrolling in areas prone to crime, conducted stop and searches, and assisted individuals in various situations, including aiding a 19-year-old with special needs on a bridge and managing a mental health crisis that required coordinated efforts from multiple agencies.
However, amidst the remarkable work being done, it was impossible for Councillor Muzammil to overlook the challenges faced by the police force. Delays in coordinating responses, particularly in mental health crises, underscored the need for more resources and streamlined procedures to ensure officers can focus on their core duty of keeping the community safe. Additionally, the burden of paperwork added to the challenges faced by officers, highlighting the importance of providing administrative support and streamlining bureaucratic processes.
Despite these challenges, Councillor Muzammil left the police station in the morning with newfound respect and admiration for the officers. Their dedication, compassion, and willingness to put themselves in harm's way to protect the community were truly commendable. As a local councillor, she recognized her responsibility to advocate for improvements and provide the support and resources needed to enable law enforcement officers to carry out their duties effectively.
She emphasised the importance of prioritising officers' safety and well-being by ensuring they have access to adequate training, equipment, and mental health support services. Additionally, she advocated for enhancing collaboration between law enforcement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to address complex issues such as mental health crises more effectively.
Councillor Muzammil expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to advocate for improvements and support law enforcement officers in any way possible. She extended heartfelt thanks to all the officers who welcomed her and allowed her to witness firsthand the incredible work they do every day, especially to PC James Poole and PC Matt, who graciously tolerated her incessant chatter and questions. She looks forward to joining them on more ride-alongs in the future and encourages others to do the same to gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices officers make to keep the community safe.
